Werewolf Randall Carter is settling into his new role as Alpha. His continued survival is down to a collection of facts he prefers to keep closely-guarded secrets: his lover is a werewolf he’ll break whatever laws he has to and he’s willing to become a monster to protect those he loves. From the multi-award-winning author Claire North comes a daring reimagining that breathes life into ancient myth and gives voice to the women who stand defiant in a world ruled by ruthless men. I entered the study, and Father briefly moved his eyes from his reflection to acknowledge me. It seemed there was always a lesson for me to learn. My knock was firm, a request made by Father himself. It was hard to imagine that in less than two weeks, these halls would be flooded with girls. I nodded at advisors and familiar guards along the way. Finding no fault, I left for my father’s study. There would be more eyes watching than usual tonight, and I needed to look like the self-confident prince everyone was expecting. Stopping in front of my mirror, I checked my tie again. The momentum was building, exciting and terrifying in one fell swoop.įor the girls, the process started once they filled out the forms-thousands must have done so by this point. The palace staff was being reallocated, wardrobe preparations were being made, and rooms were being readied for our new guests. The census had been compiled, the figures checked multiple times. Most of the other, presumably white characters’ skin tones are not described, with pale Tarquin’s “strange foreign coloring” a notable exception. Caro describes herself as having a mixed heritage, noting the varying shades of brown in her relatives from her mother’s side. Caro’s narrative voice is smart and colloquial worldbuilding details are imparted naturally through dialogue and her reflections on it. But as he and Caro change course from Caro’s contracted destination to one Tarquin insists on, he grows on both her and readers. Pompous and overbearing, highborn Tarquin sneers at both Caro and wherrymen. To gain back his freedom-and maybe attract the god’s attention-Caro agrees to use her father’s wherry to transport a mysterious cargo: a young man named Tarquin Meredios who claims to be a royal courier. When pirates burn several wherries, Caro’s smuggler father is arrested. Caroline Oresteia, a wherryman’s daughter and granddaughter, knows that she’s meant for the river-but at age 17, she has yet to hear the voice of the god at its bottom. If I’m after a direct explanation of the sequel trilogy, this isn’t really the place. We’re going to be talking about the first entry in Chuck Wendig’s Aftermath trilogy, with which the novel shares a name. If so – they got me, about five years later. Planners may well have thought that people who cared enough would go and investigate these, and everyone else would go with the flow.
